Grand Designs UK has a new series for 2021 which sees Kevin McLeod return with “episodes full of remarkable self-builds, sharing the architecture and emotions that come with risking everything to create an extraordinary home”.

In the Fens, South Lincolnshire Amye and Nathan take on a complex barn build to suit multi generations of their family including Nathan’s teenage children and his mum and step dad.  They were empty handed when searching the area for the ideal barn conversion so when they found the perfect plot they launched right into self build their £600k dream cathedral-like Dutch barn with a contemporary twist!

A challenging landscape of marshland and heavy rains during the project make for some setbacks along the way for Nathan as he project manages their ambitious plans.  Presenter Kevin McCloud explaining: “Building here, it’s a bit like pushing water uphill.”

Grand Designs is a much loved show which follows British couples and families trying to build their dream homes.  Last night this episode aired on TVNZ and like much of the press lately viewers are sharing mixed views about the ultimate appeal of this build’s design.  Presenter Kevin McLeod positively claimed the finished build was like  “a collection of upturned boats, protecting their precious human cargo.” On the other hand some viewers turned to Twitter saying they felt the design was more in keeping with a crematorium!   If you missed this episode of Season 18 watch here on TVNZ On Demand.

Tomorrow night we head to South Lincolnshire where Nathan and Amye are building a unique cathedral-like home modelled on local Dutch barn houses.
